There are several specimens of Dwarf Gourami
such as Coral Blue Gourami, Flame Dwarf Gourami, Neon Dwarf Gourami and
Honey Dwarf Gourami. This article could apply to any of these breeds.
Dwarf
Gourami's are a medium sized fish in a tropical community tank. These
fish grow to a maximum of 7cm. They are hardy when kept with fish of a
similar size. As with all Gourami's, they are egglayers and will build
a bubblenest to breed.
The
very colourful males of the species come predominantly in either a red
or blue colour. Females are a drab looking, smaller fish with a silver
look, so sexing them is extremely easy.
Dwarf
Gourami's tend to be an individual in the tank. They generally are not
a social fish but prefer to be left alone in its own "territory" within
the tank. They are generally not aggressive, but may chase a fish out
of its territory in the community tank. It may be threatened by larger
or faster fish.
Dwarf
Gourami's possess a labryinth organ, which allows them to breath air
directly. You will notice them constantly visiting the water's surface
to breathe. In the wild, this allows them to live in swamps or pools of
low water quality.
Dwarf Gourami's generally habitat the mid to top level of the aquarium.
Dwarf
Gourami's are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods including flake
food, live or frozen brine shrimp, bloodworms, algae and plants.
In the home aquarium, it is good practice to offer the Dwarf Gourami a well planted tank with a variety of foods.
