Angelfish

One of the most unique and attractive community fish available today is the beautiful Angelfish. The Angelfish's unique shape makes them a favourite amongst tropical enthusiasts and they are one of the most commonly found fish in tropical community set ups.

Originating in South America, where they inhabit the Amazon River waters, Angelfish are actually an American Cichlid. They prefer moderately soft water.

PH should be kept between 6.0 to 7.5 however these fish do well with a standard neutral PH, allowing many other tropical specimens to co-exist in the same environment.

Angelfish grow to a relatively large size and have been known to live for 10 years or more. Angelfish will grow to a maximum size of 15cm when fully mature.

This impressive looking fish is generally peaceful up to a medium size, however as they become larger they can sometimes eat smaller fish - Angels certainly love their live food. You might find your Neon's disappearing one by one.

Angelfish are a mid-level dwelling fish that will majestically glide around the tank, often showing themselves well at the viewing window - curious of goings on outside the tank.

Because Angels grow quite large, it is recommended that the tank be no less than 65 Litres, but 150 litres would be more preferable. They will co-exist in the same aquarium with other species like Gouramis', Larger Tetras, Rainbowfish and Dwarf American Cichlids.

Prior to spawning, Angelfish are difficult to sex, yet relatively easy to breed once you have yourself a pair. Angelfish are ready to breed at around 12 months of age. Males will have a straight chin to stomach area where as a female has a slight outward curve in this area.

Good advice is purchasing 6 or so and that usually results in at least one breeding pair. They will often lay eggs in a community tank, commonly on the glass, a large leaf, heater or a piece of smooth rock like some slate. During spawning, Angels may become aggressive toward tank mates while guarding the eggs and fry.

Angelfish come in a variety of breeds including Silver, Gold, Black, Zebra and Marble.
